Not A "Serious" Runner
Monday, January 2, 2012
I've been slacking in both my running and my blogging. For shame! Most recent updates, I ran a 5k with my friend Heather. Heather is trying to run 30 races before she turns 30, and since I'm a "serious runner" she wants me to run most of them with her :) Helping her stay motivated though kind of makes me want to become a coach. Too bad all the certification classes are funn :(

A Little Background
I believe that running should be fun.
I don't do it to win, I do it just to do it. (And the t-shirts, medals and free stuff is pretty awesome too)
I don't boast to be a "serious" runner. It doesn't matter if you run a 5 minute mile or a 15 minute mile, it's still a mile. Currently I'm in a 12 minute mile range, eventually I would like to be in the 10 minute mile range. I have accepted that I will never be a 7 to 8 minute miler. I don't have enough time to put forth the effort, I've got short legs, and I have trouble breathing when I run. I started running in June of 2010, to train for a half marathon in September, my first ever race. At that time I was a 14 minute mile. Within the year I would say I have come a long way.
I did apply for a sponsorship with Marathon Bars and I was accepted, two years running :)
Since I started running, I have completed 4 half marathons, my 5th one will be this weekend. I've done a handful of 5ks, my most recent being last weekend.
Which brings me to why I started this blog. Over the weeked at my 5k, I placed 3rd in my age group. An old running partner indicated that I should have posted by time (since it was slow) with an asteriks that the race was on the small side. Yes it was on the small side, about 100 participants. My age group was 18-29, maybe about 10 people in the age group. They likened me to saying I finished 3rd to someone saying they won a marathon when they were the only one who was competing (and I thought that the running community was full of NICE people). My thoughts are 3rd is 3rd. It doesn't matter how many people were competing or what my time was. I finished 3rd. I earned it. This fellow runner has accused me of not being consistant in my training (when recently I have been the most consistant I have ever been and working the hardest I have ever worked). Today this runner went as far as to tell me that I present myself as a serious runner with my sponsorship and my race plans, but I don't fit the profile. As I stated before, I have never boasted to be a serious runner. Sure I have a sponsorship, but I have never presented myself as less than what I am, a slow poke of a runner. The sponsorship keeps me motivated to strive to reach new goals and to work harder. When I talk about my races to others, I generally tell people that I am doing it for the swag and the bling.
So I started this blog. I'm not a serious runner, I do it for fun. Follow along and you too will know what it's like to be one of the slow pokes :)
